ORIGINS OF THE BAAL SHEM TOV No. 47 |
In the last installment, Reb Boruch Weisner, a tzadik nistor, ran a Yeshiva in the holy community of Slotzk. His goal was to confront the bitter opposition to the mekubolim and nistorim.
Although Reb Boruch created a counter-force to the petty people that opposed the mystics in Slotzk, this was no guarantee for him that the controversy which had caused a split in the Jewish camp would not penetrate to his own house. His two sons had been raised and educated in his yeshiva and followed in their father's footsteps, but Reb Boruch feared that they might marry girls of upstanding families in Slotzk and thereby come under the influence of misnagdim fathers-in-law, thereby ruining anything he had accomplished.
He considered and weighed the problem of their future in his mind and also discussed it with the nistorim that visited him, until it was finally decided to send the boys to Lemberg. There they were wedded to the daughters of scholarly tzadikim. Their fathers-in-law were desperately poor, and in order for people to think that the mechutonim supported their sons-in-law, Reb Boruch was forced to support the in-laws as well as the new couples.
In the first years after their marriage, the sons studied Torah. After several years they began dealing in real estate, as their father had done. They built a Beis Medrosh on their property as well as a guest house. They were magnanimous and doled out charity generously.
Meanwhile a change of attitude took place in Slotzk. During the years 5464 - 5469 mekubolim arrived in numbers to the city. Clearly, this was due to Reb Boruch's influence in the yeshiva. Many of his students had become inhabitants and their influence was evident.
This change attracted many mekubolim who came with an air of self-assurance and courage. They felt that they were strong enough already to oppose the zealots, although this required much effort and was not an easy thing to do, since the opposition was still strong. The townspeople suspected every traveler who came to their city of being one of the mekubolim or nistorim. Anyone from this hated camp who was caught was oppressed and often chased out of town.
The nistorim, for their part, were not silent. Despite all persecution they entered the city, arousing the misnagdim's wrath and causing a bitter, ever-growing controversy in the city.
To be continued.

"Do not fear them, for it is G-d, your G-d, who is fighting for you." Devarim 3:22
THE MAGIC MIRROR
And it happened that once while traveling, Rabbi Schneur Zalman (known as the Alter Rebbe) was in a city when a house caught on fire. When the Alter Rebbe arrived at the scene of the fire, a group of Russian soldiers were trying unsuccessfully to extinguish it. The Rebbe stood in front of the blazing house, leaned on his cane and gazed for a few moments into the fire. Suddenly, the fire died down until the fire was easily extinguished.
The exhausted soldiers could barely believe their eyes. They ran to report the astonishing event to their General. After hearing their story, he sent a group of soldiers to ask the Rabbi to come and see him. When the Alter Rebbe arrived, the General asked him, "Are you any relation to the Jewish holy man known as the Baal Shem Tov?"
The Rebbe replied, "Sir, while I'm not a blood relative, I consider myself to be his spiritual grandson because I am a disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch, the Baal Shem Tov's successor. Why do you ask?"
"When I heard how the fire was brought under control after you gazed at it for a few moments, it reminded me of a story that happened to my father."
"My father was also a general. Once he was stationed with his troops in the village of Mezibush. At that time, my father was deeply troubled because many weeks had passed since he had received a letter from his wife. He started to have all kinds of bad thoughts. This caused him to be in a very bad mood which he took out on his troops. One of his officers suggested that he should seek the advice of a local Jewish holy man, known as the Baal Shem Tov, who was reputed to be a miracle worker. 'Maybe he'll be able to tell you some news about your wife,' said the officer.
"My father, although still in a foul mood, agreed and sent this very officer to arrange a meeting between him and the Baal Shem Tov. Much to my father's surprise, the gabbai of the Baal Shem Tov told the officer that the Baal Shem Tov refused to see him. So my father sent a higher ranked officer, but the Baal Shem Tov again refused to see him. By this time, my father was infuriated that this simple Rabbi refused to see his officers and of course himself, the commanding officer, a General no less. My father knew about Jewish customs and holidays. At that time, it was right before Passover. So he sent another officer to relay the threat to the Baal Shem Tov that if he did not grant him an interview, he, being the General, would quarter his troops in Jewish homes. This would cause bread and even non-kosher food to be brought into the Jewish homes just before Passover."
"The threat worked and the Baal Shem Tov sent back a message inviting the General, my father, to his home. When my father arrived, he entered a waiting room and saw the Baal Shem Tov, nthrough an open doorway, sitting in his study. He was absorbed in a book which my father later found out was a kabbalistic book called the Zohar. However, before my father even knocked on the door to the study, his attention was caught by a large mirror on the wall in the waiting room."
"He went over to the mirror to adjust his clothes before meeting the Rabbi. When he looked into the mirror, to his astonishment, he saw the road leading to his own city, instead of his own reflection. As he watched the road, the scene changed and he saw his own house. Suddenly he could see into his house. There his wife was sitting at a table and writing a letter to him. He was able to clearly see the letter. She was writing an apology for having not written sooner. She explained that it was due to her difficult pregnancy and delivery of a baby boy. Everything was fine."
"My father was overwhelmed by the vision in the mirror. When he met with the Baal Shem Tov, he thanked him profusely. A few days later, he received a letter from his wife, identical to what he had seen in the mirror. My father then wrote down the whole story in his personal diary."
"I," concluded the General to Rabbi Schneur Zalman, "am the son whose birth was announced in that letter! Also, I always carry with me the diary in which my father recorded this event."
And so it was.

DIVINE LIGHT
The Mystical Light Of The Baal Shem Tov |
45. THE Baal Shem Tov taught his students to bring themselves to a state of awe by meditating on the greatness of G-d before prayer.
"When you want to pray, first bring yourself to a state of awe[1], for this is the gate to enter before the Blessed One.[2] Say in your heart: 'To Whom do I want to attach myself? To Him Who created all the worlds with His words, and Who enlivens and sustains them!' You should meditate on His greatness and exaltedness; then you can enter the supernal worlds." Tzava'as HaRivash, 66

HEART OF PRAYER
Anthology of the Teachings of the Baal Shem Tov on Prayer |
12-1 When you pray, you should concentrate on arousing the letters of Creation.
When you pray, you should concentrate on arousing the letters which created the heaven and earth, the upper and lower creatures, and all the worlds. Then, the entire universe will recite the words of prayer with you, for the letters you invoke are the vitality of all creatures. This elevates all things in creation, both in heaven and on earth.
When lofty and spiritual individuals pray with this intention, they also arouse the letters of people on a lower level so that they too can pray with greater concentration and enthusiasm, thus becoming better people.
The Baal Shem Tov told his disciples to pray even for the bird flying overhead. This intention also helps people benefit from the words of Torah with which you admonish them. Darchei Tzedek 39 |

KESER SHEM TOV
An anthology of Teachings on the Torah by the Baal Shem Tov |
Kst 88
The Baal Shem Tov taught:
Every human being is composed of the Ten Sephirot, since every human being is a microcosm of Creation, and whatever is present in the dimension of "world," is present in the dimensions of time and soul,[1] as alluded to in the verse, "Mount Sinai was full of smoke/ASHaN."[2]
The lowest level in man is connected with pain and suffering, and corresponds to the Sephirah of Malchut, as the verse [alluding to Malchut] says, "Her feet descend to death."[3] The Sephirot of Netzach and Hod are paralleled in man by the pillars of faith upon which he stands, which establish one's firm faith in G-d. The Sephirah of Yesod represents one finding more pleasure in serving G-d than from any other pleasure.[4]
[1]From here, and from the next paragraph, we see that this lesson is speaking about the human soul, and not the human body. The Sephirot are certainly represented in the human body, but that is included in the dimension of "world." Also, the specific "sites" of the Sephirot within their traditional depiction are also paralleled in the human body, as we also see from the next paragraph, with lowest Sephirah, the Malchut, represented by the bottom of the feet, the Netzach and Hod represented by the legs, and the Yesod represented by the organs of pleasure.
[2]This Hebrew word is an acronym of world (aolam), time (shanah), and soul (nefesh). The reason why these three levels of existence are alluded to with the word smoke is because G-d reveals Himself through these three channels, which are in fact veils - "smoke screens" - that conceal G-d as well as manifest Him (Mei HaShiloach VaYaytzay, V'hineh).
