ORIGINS OF THE BAAL SHEM TOV  No. 57

In the last installment, Reb Boruch Wiesner decided to explain to the young man the nistor's way of life and to draw him closer and have him meet Reb Adam Baal Shem, the leader of all nistorim.

Reb Boruch wanted to be sure he was doing the right thing so he first discussed the matter with Reb Menashe. Reb Menashe pointed out that the man was a great scholar and a person of fine character, standing on a high level of perfection. Reb Boruch then went over to the young man and asked him straight forwardly what he thought of the nistorim and their outlook, since there were so many people opposed to them and the Jewish world engaged in much controversy over them.

The genius did not hesitate for long and answered, "I wandered for three years on a self-imposed exile and traveled around the world. During this time I became convinced that the nistorim are doing important work that accomplishes much for Klall Yisroel."

When he heard this, Reb Boruch sighed with pleasure. He now knew for sure that his suspicions had all been false. The young man now began speaking about himself. He revealed some personal details. He recounted how he had left his wife and children four years ago for a planned absence of five years. Three of these years were to be spent in exile,' and the other two in  intensive  study. His period  of exile had already passed and now he was spending his two years of study in Reb Boruch's yeshiva, a place that he found very suited to his purpose. He also began telling about the villages and towns he had passed through in his travels. In the beginning of his exile he had come to a small village where he had met five nistorim and had continued his travels with them. Two of his companions exhibited scholarliness and he discussed Torah with them but the others refused to reveal anything and presented themselves as simple people. Wherever they came they always befriended only the simple folk.

BAAL SHEM TOV STORY

A DRY SUCCAH

"During these seven days you must live in Succahs. This is so that future generations will know that I (G●d) had the Israelites live in Succahs when I brought them out of Egypt." Leviticus 23:42-43

One year, in the holy community of Kitov, it poured with rained on the first night of Succos. Rabbi Chaim, a great Torah scholar and opponent to the fledgling Chassidic movement ("the Sect"), was slightly aggravated that he would not be unable to enjoy the first night in the Succah.
[1]

While waiting in his house for the rain to abate, R. Chaim saw one of his acquaintances casually walking down the street as if he had already finished his Yom Tov meal in the Succah. When Rabbi Chaim inquired as to where he was going, the man told him that he was returning from having dinner in the Succah of Rabbi Gershon Kitover.[2] "And Rabbi Chaim," he continued, "there was a miracle there because not a single drop of rain was falling through the schach."

Rabbi Chaim asked his son to go to Rabbi Gershon's Succah and see if it really wasn't raining there. When his son came to the Rabbi Gershon's Succah, he looked in and sure enough, everyone was sitting, talking and eating. There was not a single drop of rain coming through the schach into the Succah. Rabbi Gershon invited Rabbi Chaim's son to join them but he refused, explaining that he had to return to have Yom Tov dinner with his father.

When the son returned, he told his father, R. Chaim, that it was true. "Father, Rabbi Gershon was sitting in his Succah, and I saw with my own eyes that there was not even a single drop of rain coming into the Succah."

Rabbi Chaim rolled his eyes. Of course he believed his son's report but he wasn't that impressed. The rain finally relented and Rabbi Chaim and his son went into their own wet Succah for Kiddush and the Yom Tov meal. Naturally, they discussed the miracle of Rabbi Gershon's dry Succah and other miracles that the so called Tzaddikim of the Sect were able to do. Rabbi Chaim said, "In my opinion, creating such miracles, as obviously done by our friend Rabbi Gershon, is against the spirit of the Torah."

Early the next morning, Rabbi Chaim and Rabbi Gershon met on their way to the mikveh, in preparation for fulfilling the mitzvah of the lulav and esrog.

"Rabbi," said Rabbi Gershon to Rabbi Chaim, "I understand that you were sitting in your Succah last night and speaking loshon hara[3] about me."

Rabbi Chaim answered with astonishment, "How did you find out about what I said in my Succah? I was sitting there completely alone with my son. And I'm sure he didn't tell you what I said. The only logical answer is that a Heavenly angel told you. But that seems impossible because an angel does not have the authority to speak loshon hara."

Rabbi Gershon answered, "Our Sages teach us that 'Whoever fulfills one mitzvah acquires one angel to speak up in his defense, and whoever does one transgression acquires one prosecuting angel to speak against him.' So it was that prosecuting angel who you created last night by your loshon hara about me who came and told me what you said."

And so it was.

DIVINE LIGHT
The Mystical Light Of The Baal Shem Tov

55. The Baal Shem Tov taught us how to bind ourselves to G*d with every action - even in mundane conversation. As it says: "'And their leaves shall not wither'[1] - this refers to the common talk of Torah scholars."[2] Thus, he brought the king before our eyes - the King of Kings, the Holy One, blessed be He. There are Supernal unifications in every word and mundane story. I heard from the Baal Shem Tov that he would unite himself Above with his everyday tales.

The Baal Shem Tov taught:

The reason why giving the body pleasure on the Sabbath is a mitzvah is because the spirit is then able to rejoice even more in being with G*d.

This can be understood with the parable of a captive prince who received a letter from his father.[1]

[1] Toldot Yaakov Yoseph, Bo, #8. The entire parable is found in the Toldoth in Kedoshim #1: A king's only son was taken captive. After many years, during which much effort and hope was put into redeeming him and returning him to his father, the prince received a letter from his father, the king. It urged him not to become discouraged and not to forget the ways of royalty, despite living all these years among human wolves, for his father was still doing his utmost to bring him home by whatever means, whether by attacking or peacefully. The son was immediately extremely happy, but since this was a secret message, he could not rejoice openly. What did he do? He went to the local pub and drank with others, but while they were reveling in their liquor, he was rejoicing in his father's letter (see also other sources in the Sefer Baal Shem Tov, Beresheit n. #69).

The prince is the human soul, which is in "captivity" in the earthly body. Every week, the king sends the prince a letter of encouragement - the Sabbath. The body, though, is not interested in rejoicing in this spiritual message, and even scorns it, and must be "seduced" into rejoicing by providing it with in its own pleasures, so that the soul can then rise unfettered, in its ecstasy.
